A new international subsea gateway is being established in Visakhapatnam (Vizag) as part of Google’s $15 billion “America-India Connect” initiative, announced in February 2026.
This project will establish Vizag as a key digital gateway on India’s east coast, providing improved connectivity to Singapore, South Africa, and Australia, and enhancing network redundancy beyond traditional hubs in Mumbai and Chennai.
Key Details of the Subsea Connectivity Project:
-
- New Subsea Paths: The initiative will deliver three new direct subsea paths connecting India to Singapore, South Africa, and Australia.
- Data Center Hub: In addition to the gateway, Google is partnering with local entities to develop a gigawatt-scale AI data center campus in Vizag.
- Strategic Importance: The project aims to increase the resilience of India’s digital backbone, supporting rising demand for AI, cloud computing, and high-speed data transmission.
- Route Diversification: The new routes will enable traffic to bypass traditional routes and reduce dependence on existing infrastructure by offering direct paths from India’s east coast.
- Partnerships: The initiative involves collaborations for a carrier-neutral open cable landing station and terrestrial fiber network.
The development is expected to make Visakhapatnam a major international digital connectivity hub in the Southern Hemisphere.
