FIRST ASIAN BUDDHIST SUMMIT (ABS)

CONTEXT: The first Asian Buddhist Summit (ABS) will be held in New Delhi on 5-6 November 2024. Organized by the Ministry of Culture and the International Buddhist Confederation, the summit focuses on the theme ‘Role of Buddha Dhamma in Strengthening Asia’.

EXPLANATION:

About the Summit:

  • The theme of the summit is Role of Buddha Dhamma in Strengthening Asia, reflecting India’s Act East Policy aimed at promoting collective, inclusive, and spiritual development in the region.
  • The summit will be inaugurated by President of India.
  • A group of Buddhist scholars from 11 countries, including Japan, South Korea, Sri Lanka, and Nepal, participated in the Buddha Bhoomi Vandan Yatra program organized by the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR).
  • It will gather Buddhist leaders, scholars, experts, and practitioners from various traditions across Asia to foster dialogue, enhance mutual understanding, and address contemporary challenges faced by the Buddhist community.
  • It also aims to enhance awareness of Buddhist heritage and its contributions to creating a more compassionate, sustainable, and peaceful world.

Key themes of the summit:

    • Buddhist Art, Architecture and Heritage:Discussions will focus on the rich artistic and architectural traditions of Buddhism. This includes historical sites and their cultural relevance.
    • Buddha Cārikā and Dissemination of Buddha Dhamma: The summit will explore the journey of Buddha Dhamma and its spread across Asia. This includes methods of teaching and sharing Buddhist principles.
    • Role of Holy Buddhist Relics: The significance of Buddhist relics will be examined. Their relevance in modern society and cultural practices will be discussed.
    • Buddha Dhamma in Scientific Research and Well-Being:This theme will investigate how Buddhist principles can contribute to scientific research and enhance well-being. It marks the intersection of spirituality and science.
    • Buddhist Literature and Philosophy in the 21st Century:The summit will address the importance of Buddhist literature and philosophy today. It will consider their role in contemporary issues.

Purpose of the Summit:

  • The summit aims to unite Sangha leaders, scholars, experts, and practitioners from various Buddhist traditions. It seeks to encourage dialogue and promote understanding. The event will address contemporary challenges faced by the Buddhist community across Asia.

Buddha Dhamma and Indian Identity:

  • Buddha Dhamma is a vital part of India’s cultural identity. It has influenced the country’s foreign policy and diplomatic relations. The incorporation of Buddhist symbols reflects this connection. India’s national identity is intertwined with the values of Buddhism.
  • Buddhism holds an important place in India’s spiritual and cultural history. The teachings of the Buddha and his followers have created a shared outlook on life and values across Asia. This commonality has helped maintain unity among diverse cultures.
