Consumption expenditure surveys (CES) methodology

1. Uniform Recall Period (URP):

    • Consumption data for ALL items are collected for a 30-day recall period in the survey which is conducted by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.
    • This method was stopped in 1993-94.

2. Mixed Recall Period (MRP)

    • 2 sets of items
    • 5 non-food items (clothing, footwear, durable goods, education and medical expenses) are surveyed for a 365-day recall period.
    • Remaining items: 30-day recall period

3. Modified Mixed Recall Period (MMRP)

    • 365-day recall period: clothing, footwear, durable goods, education and medical expenses
    • 7-day recall period: edible oil; meat, fish and eggs; vegetables, fruits, spices; processed foods, refreshments and beverages; pan, tobacco and intoxicants.
    • 30-day recall period: fuel and light; expenses like rents, taxes etc
    • Basically, data collection period is more refined to make it more relevant to actual consumption period.

Note: Lowest estimation of poverty: Under MMRP
