THE INDIA SKILLS REPORT (ISR) 2026

The India Skills Report (ISR) 2026 (13th Edition), released by ETS in collaboration with CII, AICTE, and Taggd, highlights a pivotal shift in India’s labor market. For the first time, employability has crossed the 56% mark, driven by a “skills-first” hiring culture and the rapid integration of AI.

1. Headline Statistics

The report indicates that Indian youth are becoming significantly more “job-ready” compared to previous years.

    • Overall Employability: Increased to 35% (up from 54.8% in 2025 and 46.2% in 2022).
    • Hiring Intent: Companies plan to hire 40% more freshers in FY 2026–27, a sharp rise from the 29% intent seen last year.
    • Gender Milestone: For the first time in the report’s history, Women (54%) have surpassed Men (51.5%) in employability.

2. Top Performing Regions (States & Cities)

The 2026 data shows a shift in talent hubs, with Tier-2 cities and Northern states making massive leaps.

    • Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the top-ranked state, overtaking industrial giants like Maharashtra and Karnataka.
    • Lucknow and Kochi have surpassed traditional metros like Delhi and Hyderabad in terms of talent readiness.

3. The “Death of the Pedigree Premium”

A major theme in the 2026 report is the declining importance of degrees from elite institutions (IITs/IIMs) versus specific technical capabilities.

    • Skills > Degrees:64% of employers now consider candidates with skills in AI/ML, Data Science, and Cybersecurity as “premium talent,” regardless of their college. Only 31% still prioritize “Premier League” tags (IIT/IIM).
    • Irrelevant Curricula: Employers reported that 72% of undergraduate and 58% of B-school curricula are not aligned with current industry needs.
    • Proof of Ability: Hiring is shifting toward portfolios, micro-credentials, and industry certifications over formal diplomas.

4. AI and the Gig Economy

    • Global AI Talent: India now accounts for 16% of the global AI talent pool, with a projected 1.25 million specialists by 2027.
    • AI Adoption: Over 90% of employees in India now report using Generative AI tools in their daily workflows.
    • Gig Growth: The gig and freelance workforce is projected to hit 5 million by 2030. Project-based hiring is growing at a rate of 38% annually.

Key Challenges Identified

Despite the growth, the report warns of a “Mid-Career Bottleneck.” Professionals with 6–15 years of experience are currently the hardest to find and replace. While freshers are becoming more tech-savvy, there is a massive gap in leadership talent that can manage AI-driven transitions.
