- Preah Vihear Temple is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, located on the Dângrêk Mountains.
- It lies on the Cambodia–Thailand border and has been a subject of territorial dispute between the two countries.
- Built mainly during the Khmer Empire (9th–12th century).
- Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008.
- The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled in 1962 that the temple belongs to Cambodia; later clarifications reaffirmed this.
- Renewed clashes between Cambodian and Thai forces have escalated along the border, with the vicinity of Preah Vihear becoming a flashpoint, including reported artillery, rocket and air strikes.
- UNESCO has expressed deep concern, urging urgent measures to protect the temple and other heritage sites, and reminded parties of their obligations under international law.
