Objective:
To ensure safety and dignity of sanitation workers by making sanitation work safer across the urban India.
Features:

- Its earlier name was Self-Employment scheme for Rehabilitation of Manual Scavengers, implemented since 2007.
- It is a central sector scheme.
- It is a joint effort of Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Ministry of housing and urban affairs and Department of drinking water and sanitation.
- Time period: 2023-24 to 2025-26.
- The scheme will be implemented in all ULBs including para-statal bodies and cantonment boards of India.
- Urban Local Bodies (ULB) will be responsible for monitoring and reporting on real time basis through mobile app and dedicated MIS platform.
Intended Outcomes:

- Formalized skilled workers to perform all work.
- No direct contact with human faecal matter.
- Empowerment of sanitation workers through SHGs.
- Sewer and Septic tank sanitation workers (SSWs) to be provided capital subsidy to purchase equipments.
