IndiaAI MISSION

TAG: GS-2:  GOVERNANCE & GS-3: SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

THE CONTEXT: The IndiaAI Mission has selected eight Responsible AI Projects against the Expression of Interest (EoI) floated under the Safe and Trusted AI Pillar of the IndiaAI Mission.

EXPLANATION:

About the Project:

  • The IndiaAI Mission, under the Digital India Corporation and Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY), has selected eight Responsible AI Projects from over 2000 proposals submitted by academic institutions, start-ups, and research organisations.
  • The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has been allocated Rs 551.75 crore in the Union Budget 2024-25 to enhance AI infrastructure, including the procurement of high-performance Graphic Processing Units (GPUs).
    • Aim to advance the responsible development, deployment and adoption of AI technologies in India by creating indigenous tools, frameworks and guidelines that reflect the country’s unique challenges and opportunities.

Under the projects:

  • Machine Unlearning: Develop techniques to enable AI models to “forget” specific data points, enhancing privacy and security.
  • Synthetic Data Generation: Address data bias issues by generating synthetic data to ensure AI fairness.
  • AI Bias Mitigation: Focus on reducing bias in AI systems, particularly in sensitive fields like healthcare.
    • Establish a toolset, “Nishpaksh,” to evaluate AI models for fairness and ethical behaviour.
  • Algorithm Auditing: Build frameworks for auditing AI algorithms to assess and improve accountability and fairness.
  • AI Governance: Develop a governance framework to assess and monitor the safety, transparency, and ethical risks of large AI models like LLMs.

What is the IndiaAI Mission?

  • It is a government initiative to promote artificial intelligence (AI) innovation in India.
  • Objective: The mission aims to establish a robust AI computing infrastructure in India to support the development and testing of AI systems.
    • The Mission aims to enhance data quality and develop indigenous AI technologies. It focuses on attracting top talent, fostering industry collaboration, supporting impactful AI startups, and promoting ethical AI practices.
    • Focus areas: Healthcare, education, agriculture, smart cities and infrastructure.

Key initiatives for another the IndiaAI Mission:

  • IndiaAI Application Development Pillar: This initiative promotes AI solutions in critical sectors by developing, scaling and promoting AI applications.
  • IndiaAI FutureSkills: This initiative aims to break down barriers to AI education by offering fellowships to students in top engineering colleges.
  • INDIAai Platform: This platform serves as a one-stop portal for AI-related development in India. It provides resources such as articles, news, interviews and investment funding news and events. It also offers AI courses, both free and paid.
  • Lead agencies for the mission: NITI Aayog, the Department of Science and Technology (DST), the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT).
