ISRO to Improve Tracking of Punjab-Haryana Farm Fires

    • The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) is discussing with ISRO and Punjab-Haryana authorities ways to improve the measurement and “ground truthing” of stubble-burning fires.

Why are Farm Fires Important?

    • Stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana is a major contributor to air pollution during certain weeks of October-November.
    • During this period, paddy stubble is frequently burned to clear fields for wheat sowing.
    • Farm fires can contribute up to 44% of particulate matter pollution on certain weeks, according to studies cited in the report.
    • However, overall winter pollution is multi-source, involving vehicles, industry, agricultural waste, firecrackers and weather conditions.
