ISRO’s Aditya-L1 mission unlocks solar flare secrets with new image:
-
- Solar Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (SUIT) payload (on Aditya-L1, India’s first dedicated space-based solar mission) has captured first-ever image of a solar flare ‘kernel’ in lower solar atmosphere – photosphere and chromosphere.
- Aditya-L1 mission was launched on September 2, 2023.
- On January 6, 2024, spacecraft was successfully placed in a large halo orbit around first Earth-Sun Lagrange Point, known as Lagrange Point L1, which is about 1.5 million km from Earth.
- A satellite placed in halo orbit around L1 point has major advantage of continuously viewing Sun without any occultation/eclipses.
- Four payloads directly view Sun and remaining three payloads carry out in-situ studies of particles and fields at Lagrange point L1.

Melting of Arctic ice is releasing methane in atmosphere:
-
- A team of scientists have discovered that Arctic glaciers, glacial melt rivers and groundwater springs release large volumes of methane from beneath ice to atmosphere.
- Methane that was being released was not produced by microbial activity beneath ice. Rather it came from thermogenic sources — methane that had been trapped in region’s ancient geological formations for millions of years
- Methane is one of main drivers of climate change, responsible for 30 per cent of the warming since preindustrial times, second only to carbon dioxide.
- Over 20 years, methane is 80 times more potent at warming than carbon dioxide.
- It is also primary contributor to the formation of ground-level ozone, a colourless and highly irritating gas that forms just above the Earth’s surface.
