QUOTATIONS AND CAPTIONS

    • International cooperation on clean energy and cooling solutions is another crucial step in addressing the climate crisis.
    • Climate change has heightened two critical threats related to cooling: the indirect emissions from inefficient air-conditioning and refrigeration systems powered by fossil fuels, and the direct emissions from harmful refrigerants.
    • India’s proactive approach to cooling challenges, especially through the ICAP, positions it as a global leader in sustainable cooling.
    • BRICS, initially a grouping of emerging economies, is now primarily a platform for Emerging Markets and Developing Countries (EMDCs). It is a combined grouping of the east and the south, juxtaposed to the Global North.
    • India attaches a high degree of importance to making BRICS an effective instrument for international cooperation.
    • BRICS allows India to serve as a bridge between the west and the east and between the north and the south, thus turning New Delhi into a geopolitical sweet spot today.
    • During periods of high growth when exports were growing and foreign capital was flowing in, the rupee appreciated which prevented the economy from overheating.
    • When the economy was in a downturn, the rupee depreciated, making Indian goods and services more attractive to foreigners, and promoting an export-led recovery.
    • If India wants to become a high-income economy, the exchange rate needs to respond freely to market forces, sending appropriate signals to market participants.
    • The Supreme Court’s verdict reaffirms the importance of balancing public welfare with private property rights.
    • COP29 must look beyond the US to progress on limiting emissions and raising finances for developing nations to transition from fossil fuels.
    • By limiting the State’s acquisition power to resources that meet certain criteria — scarcity, public impact, and necessity for community welfare — the Court has set down a clear framework to avoid arbitrary confiscation of private assets.
    • Achieving ‘Viksit Bharat’ will demand a collective effort to foster religious harmony, address environmental threats and navigate global tensions.
    • As AI transforms industries globally, it also raises concerns about job displacement in India, especially within sectors like IT, management and creative fields.
    • Comprehensive healthcare needs of India’s rapidly growing elderly population require further policy evolution, aiming for a holistic, sustainable healthcare system for the aging citizens.
    • The new dynamics of online gaming that bypass geographical boundaries, coupled with the use of smartphones and digital payments, create the need for regulatory oversight and standardised regulations.
    • Climate financing needs an intersectional gendered perspective to increase its effectiveness and maximise social benefits.
    • With the strategic importance of the oceans and a rise in illegal fishing, India must invest in emerging technologies for Maritime Domain Awareness.

ESSAY TOPIC

    • Education consists mainly of what we have unlearned.

50-WORD TALK

    • J&K Assembly resolution seeking dialogue with Centre on return to special status avoids mentioning Article 370. This makes it rhetorical in its sweep, but pragmatic in substance. It also shows how Omar Abdullah has matured in politics. There’s no need to be knee-jerked into negativity. This, in fact, is progress.
    • A second term for Donald Trump is already making global climate action advocates wary. He’s a denier. He was reluctant to support past climate commitments, including financial support to India. The US exited from the Paris Accord in his first term. All this dampens the mood for COP29 in Azerbaijan.
