TAG: GS-2: GOVERNANCE AND SOCIAL ISSUES

THE CONTEXT: The recently concluded MoHUA led Swachhata Hi Sewa Campaign under Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban has gained momentum across the country, with Northeastern States taking the lead in improving health and sanitation.

EXPLANATION:

  • It was launched virtually from Jaipur, Rajasthan
  • It aims to mobilise the participation of crores of citizens across the country via various activities such as Indian Swachhata League 2.0, SafaiMitra Suraksha Shivir and mass cleanliness drives.
  • SBM-Grameen and SBM-Urban have partnered with other key Ministries and Departments to amplify participation and community mobilisation in SHS 2023.
  • It also witnessed the launch of logo, website and portal of SHS- 2023.
  • Theme of SHS-2024 is (S4) ‘Swabhav Swachhata-Sanskar Swachhata”. As a part of this exercise, a series of activities like cleanliness drives, collection and disposal of waste, ensure clean toilets, No Black Spots etc., are proposed to be organised.
  • People participation is key to revive and rejuvenate water bodies by removing the garbage.

The campaign will culminate on Swachh Bharat Diwas on 2nd October 2024, with a nationwide Shramdaan activity to honor Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy and promote cleanliness as a way of life.

  • Provide preventive health check-ups for sanitation workers.
  • Ensure social security coverage for Safai Mitras as part of the campaign.
