ASEAN AND EAST ASIA SUMMIT

TAG: GS-2: INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

THE CONTEXT: The Prime Minister of India attended the India-ASEAN and East Asia Summit.

EXPLANATION:

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed India’s strong backing of ASEAN unity and its central role in the Indo-Pacific region during his address, emphasizing the importance of India-ASEAN relations in shaping the future of the “Asian century.” He highlighted several key milestones over the last decade, including the doubling of trade between India and ASEAN to more than USD 130 billion, expanded direct flights to seven ASEAN countries, fintech collaboration, and initiatives to restore shared cultural heritage. He also mentioned providing scholarships for ASEAN youth at Nalanda University and underscored the need for a timely review of the ASEAN-India Free Trade Agreement (AITIGA) to unlock greater economic potential.
  • In line with the summit’s theme of “Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience,” PM Modi introduced a 10-point plan aimed at strengthening ties. This included celebrating 2025 as the ASEAN-India Year of Tourism, organizing youth-centric events, hosting the ASEAN-India Women Scientists Conclave, and allocating USD 5 million for disaster resilience efforts. Other plans included doubling scholarships at Nalanda University, setting up a health ministers’ track, establishing an ASEAN-India Cyber Policy Dialogue, and promoting environmental resilience through the ‘Plant a Tree for Mother’ campaign.
  • Looking ahead, ASEAN and India agreed to establish a new Plan of Action for 2026-2030, furthering cooperation in the coming years. Two joint statements were adopted: one on strengthening the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and another on advancing digital transformation, recognizing India’s contributions to digital public infrastructure.
