CONTEXT: On September 30, 2024, Union Minister outlined the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs’ major achievements in the first 100 days of this government a new scheme Jal Hi AMRIT.
EXPLANATION:
PMAY-U 2.0: Affordable Housing Initiative
- The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U) 2.0 has been approved with an investment of ₹10 lakh crore to address the housing needs of 1 crore families.
- This initiative aligns with Prime Minister vision of “Housing for All”, ensuring that citizens have access to affordable housing, thereby enhancing their quality of life.
- An additional 3 crore rural and urban households will receive assistance for house construction under the expanded program, reaffirming the government’s commitment to housing.
Jal Hi AMRIT: Focus on Water Recycling and Reuse
- A new water management scheme, Jal Hi AMRIT, has been approved to incentivize states and union territories to efficiently manage used water treatment plants (UWTPs/STPs).
- The program focuses on the recycling, treatment, and reuse of water in both rural and urban areas, ensuring that treated water is of good quality and can be reused.
- Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and parastatal agencies are nominating treatment plants from their states for inclusion in this initiative, aimed at optimizing water sustainability.
Metro Projects: Expanding Urban Transportation
- Three major metro projects worth ₹31,000 crore have been approved within the first 100 days, improving urban connectivity and transport infrastructure:
- Bengaluru Metro Phase-3
- Thane Internal Ring Road Metro Project
- Southward extension of Pune Metro Rail Project
AMRUT 2.0: Infrastructure Development
- Under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0, the government has approved 68 projects worth ₹3,020 crore and 41 projects worth ₹3,805 crore, covering several states including Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh.
- The cumulative value of inaugurated and foundation-laid projects under AMRUT 2.0 in the first 100 days totals ₹9,352 crore across 263 projects.
Swachh Bharat Mission & Swachhata Hi Seva Campaign 2024
- The Swachh Bharat Mission continues to make significant strides, with 7.5 lakh Cleanliness Target Units (CTUs) registered on portals, and 86% of these CTUs already cleaned.
- The Swachhata Hi Seva 2024 Campaign reflects the government’s focus on public cleanliness and sanitation.
