QUOTATIONS AND CAPTIONS

  • It is most imperative that the judiciary in India intervenes and upholds the principles of justice in a democracy.
  • Curtailing the tenures of State Assemblies to synchronise them with the tenure of the Lok Sabha is an act against federalism.
  • State Assemblies are autonomous law-making bodies within the India federation and are independent of the federal parliament.
  • A fixed tenure of the Assemblies independent of the tenure of the Lok Sabha is a key aspect of the federal setup.
  • Simultaneous elections will alter the federal balance of the Constitution and it is not a priority issue for ordinary Indians.
  • A balance between economic growth and employment growth can be achieved by pursuing a two-pronged strategy. First, concerted attempts need to be made to push industrialisation in sectors that absorb more labour. Second, international competitiveness needs to be improved in technology-intensive sectors.
  • The India-US partnership is “comprehensive, global and strategic”, and not just transactional — with India buying US defence equipment and US turning a blind eye to Indian misgovernance.
  • India-US relations have grown significantly amid Washington’s expectations that Delhi can balance out the growth of Chinese power across the Indian Ocean.
  • Momentum is building for simultaneous elections, but with constitutional and political challenges ahead, its successful implementation remains uncertain.
  • A continuation of India and the Mediterranean’s historic bilateral trade ties would be a fruitful partnership for both regions. This is set to emerge as a multidimensional cooperation agenda, embracing various sectors.
  • India and the Mediterranean are two regions that historically exchanged technology, currency and culture and, within the recent geopolitical shifts, the revitalisation and renewal of this relationship can offer a significant platform for stability and greater prosperity of the world.
  • The task of civil society organizations is not only to fight against wrongs done by the government, but to do constructive work at the grassroots level in order to help people to solve their local problems through popular initiatives.
  • There is a need to integrate perspectives on the importance of insolvency laws with global trade in multilateral or bilateral routes. Specifically, FTAs are incomplete without cross-border dimensions.
  • There is a need to integrate perspectives on the importance of insolvency laws with global trade in multilateral or bilateral routes.
  • An expansive judgment on child pornography plugs legal loopholes, offers a curative framework to deal with the crime.
  • As the ego becomes aware of itself, it ends the behaviours that cause it suffering.
  • While politicians better align expenditure with citizen preferences and deliver social assistance rapidly, bureaucrats are less prone to elite capture and excel at specialised tasks.

ESSAY TOPIC

  • Economic growth without investment in human development is unsustainable — and unethical.

50-WORD TALK

  • Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi’s comment on secularism being a European concept and not a Bharatiya one can’t just be overlooked as rhetoric. He is not a politician. An IPS officer, he took the oath under a secular Constitution. His remit as a Governor is to protect precisely this Constitution.
  • As Manipur continues to simmer, Army’s now-deleted social media post seeking intel from the Centre’s security adviser signals a breakdown of the security apparatus. A rift between the CM’s office and police and conflicting claims within security forces shows the state machinery has collapsed. And the Centre’s silence is loud.
