QUOTATIONS AND CAPTIONS

  • With the current lower levels of household financial savings, having 3% of GDP as a limit to fiscal deficit should be the focus.
  • In this era of geopolitical competition and realignment, leveraging the historical partnership with Africa is imperative.
  • The United Nations faces unprecedented challenges that threaten its relevance in the modern world.
  • It is disconcerting that the Election Commission of India (ECI), the mainstay of free and fair elections, is suffering from a credibility crisis. On the one hand, the public trust in the ECI is dipping.
  • Reforming the UN involves navigating a complex web of international law. Any proposed changes must comply with existing legal frameworks and secure broad international support.
  • The India-Africa Forum Summit can be an opportunity to devise a more contemporary agenda with a view to global rebalancing and strengthening of the Global South.
  • With uncertainty in the neighbourhood and volatility across the globe, India needs adroit statecraft to maintain its regional dominance.
  • A stable and cooperative neighbourhood is indispensable for India to realise what many see as its “manifest destiny” of achieving great-power status.
  • Strategic alliances are an important tool of statecraft, which can significantly reinforce national security.
  • Despite claims to a rich heritage of “strategic culture”, India’s statecraft and military posture have thus far failed to deter these adversaries from seeking their revanchist goals.
  • India needs insurance against hegemony and domination to create space in which to nurture its economy and bridge technology gaps while boosting its military muscle.
  • The Twelfth Finance Commission had argued that the investible surplus for the private corporate sector and the non-government public sector can be derived as the excess of household financial savings and net inflow of foreign capital over the draft of this surplus by the central and State governments through their borrowing.
  • The paths of adjustment of upward and downward movements of debt-GDP ratio due to a macroeconomic shock often tends to be asymmetric.
  • If development continues without adherence to environmental laws, it risks destroying the very resources that sustain its economy. It is time for the state government to enforce stricter environmental regulations and adopt more sustainable construction practices before irreparable damage is done to its natural heritage.
  • Africa stands to benefit from India’s three significant multilateral initiatives: the International Solar Alliance, the Global Biofuel Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure.
  • Sub-classification policies have to be backed up by quantifiable data and a nation-wide or state-specific caste census is imperative for the effective implementation of this policy.

ESSAY TOPIC

  • Smallness adores and adorns itself – greatness is humble.

50-WORD TALK

  • Uttarakhand High Court’s direction to Centre to provide empanelment-related records to IFS officer Sanjiv Chaturvedi is exemplary. Officers should have right to know why they’re left out of Central empanelment. Current mechanism rewards loyalty over merit and promotes committed bureaucracy. It’s arbitrary and opaque. Transparency in empanelment is a must.
