National Green Hydrogen Mission

India has set its goal of becoming energy independent by 2047 and achieving Net Zero by 2070. To achieve this target, increasing renewable energy use across all economic spheres is central to India’s Energy Transition. Green Hydrogen is considered a promising alternative for enabling this transition.

Objectives:

    • To establish India as a global hub for production, usage and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives.
    • Decarbonisation of the economy
    • To reduce dependence on fossil fuel imports
    • Creating opportunities for employment generation and economic growth.
    • To develop of indigenous manufacturing capabilities

Targets:

    • Development of green hydrogen production capacity of at least 5 MMT (Million Metric Tonne) per annum with an associated renewable energy capacity addition of about 125 GW in the country.
    • Abatement of nearly 50 MMT of annual greenhouse gas emission.
    • Creation of over Rs 6 lakh green jobs.
    • Over Rs 8 lakh crore in total investments
    • Cumulative reduction in fossil fuel imports of over Rs 1 lakh crore.

Components:

1. Facilitating demand creation through exports and domestic utilization.

2. Strategic Intervention for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) programme:

Under this, incentives are provided for manufacturing of electrolysers and domestic production of green hydrogen.

3. Pilot projects for emerging end use sectors like steel, mobility, shipping etc.

4. Development of Green Hydrogen Hubs

5. Support for infrastructure development.

6. Establishing a robust framework of regulations and standards.

7. Research & Development programme.

8. Skill development programme

9. Public awareness and outreach programme

Intended benefits:

    • It intends to establish India as a leading producer and exporter of green hydrogen.
    • Development of indigenous manufacturing capabilities.
    • Reduction in natural gas imports, thereby achieving climate targets.
    • Attracting investments and creating opportunities for economic growth and employment.
    • It can help in decarbonising the iron and steel sector by replacing coke and coal with hydrogen.
