PRITHVI VIGYAN SCHEME

News: The scheme has recently been approved by the union cabinet.

Objectives:

    • To augment long term observations of atmosphere, ocean, geosphere, cryosphere and solid earth to record the vital signs of earth system and change.
    • Development of models for better understanding and prediction of weather, ocean and climate hazards to better understand the science of climate change.
    • Exploration of polar and high regions for discovery of new phenomenon and resources.
    • Exploration and sustainable harnessing of oceanic resources for societal applications by development of technology.
    • Translating the knowledge of earth sciences into services for societal, environmental and economic benefits.

Features:

    • Time period: 2021-2026.
    • The scheme holistically addresses the five components of Earth Sciences: atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, cryosphere, and biosphere.
    • It encompasses the five ongoing sub-schemes of Ministry of Earth Sciences-
      • ACROSS (Atmosphere & Climate Research-Modelling Observing Systems & Services)
      • O-SMART (Ocean Services, Modelling Application, Resources and Technology)
      • PACER (Polar Science and Cryosphere Research)
      • SAGE (Seismology and Geosciences)
      • REACHOUT (Research, Education, Training, and Outreach)

Significance:

    • The mission promotes improved and wider understating of the Earth Sciences by comprehensively addressing all the five components of the Earth system.
    • It is expected to develop better Understanding of weather accurately due to increased cross-disciplinary coordination and increased observation data.
    • It will boost research through increased fund availability and cross disciplinary nature of the scheme.
    • It enables integrated development of multi-disciplinary earth sciences research and innovation programs across different institutes of MoES.
    • It will address grand challenges of weather and climate, ocean, cryosphere, seismological science, and services etc., making it more predictable.
    • Exploring the living and non-living resources for their sustainable harnessing.
    • It will ultimately fulfil the mandate of MoES to translate ‘Science to Services’ for the Society.
