QUOTATIONS AND CAPTIONS

    • It is inevitable that a large number of vacancies will result in a huge backlog and ultimately discourage the people from seeking information.
    • India’s water crisis is spiralling out of control, primarily due to inadequate water management, poor environmental practices, law ambiguity, and corruption.
    • A national water policy should embrace a holistic approach to watershed management, involving local citizens in monitoring the hydrological cycle and working alongside hydrologists, engineers, and biologists.
    • Despite the current ruling regime’s emphasis on ‘Hindutva’ and embedded Hindu belief system that extols the deityship of Indian rivers, the river interlinking project stands out as a stark contrast to such an ideology.
    • A comprehensive study involving interdisciplinary expertise on river basins is essential before initiating significant water transfer projects.
    • Post Covid, the government has focussed on a capex-led recovery. It needs to be supplemented with consumption-boosting measures.
    • To sustainably boost private consumption, it is essential to increase employment opportunities and household permanent income. This, in turn, will positively influence the outlook for private investment.
    • “fourth branch institutions”; that is, a wing of the State that is separate from the legislature, the executive, and the judiciary, but performs vital functions in ensuring the implementation of rights, integrity and accountability in public functions.
    • The issues with the rules replicate issues with the Data Protection Act, which were pointed out during the time when the Act was being drafted and deliberated upon.
    • When dealing with something as crucial as citizens’ right to privacy and informational self-determination in the digital age, it is of utmost importance that rules be framed in the most precise terms possible, and leave the least scope for discretion, as this lends itself to over-collection of data and potential abuse.
    • Education reform requires more than infrastructural improvements. The focus must shift to filling vacancies, addressing regional disparities and enhancing the learning experience for students.
    • There is a dire need to give the RTI Act a new lease of life so that citizens become active partners in democracy.
    • THE Right to Information (RTI) Act with the twin objectives of empowering citizens and ensuring transparency in governance.
    • Raising awareness about multiple benefits of green hydrogen through media campaigns and stakeholder engagement will help in its widespread adoption thereby helping combat climate change. Green hydrogen is a clean fuel and energy carrier that can also be used for storing surplus renewable energy.
    • The Supreme Court’s order on ‘sacred groves’ has embraced a more inclusive, ecosystem-centric approach that values ecological functionality and cultural significance.
    • The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS) India’s new Criminal Procedure Code should not serve as a machinery for the state’s exercise of unbridled power that could often result in custodial torture.

ESSAY TOPIC

    • Justice delayed is justice denied.

50-WORD TALK

    • Unexplained downward revision of India’s past gold import figures by $5 billion for a single month underscores government’s cavalier attitude toward data. Trade deficit is 13% lower as a result. Government must explain why revision was necessary. Credible data, something India struggles with, is a basic prerequisite for ‘vishwaguru’ ambitions.
    • The principle that ‘bail is the rule, and jail is the exception’ is only a paraphrasing of Article 21 of the Constitution of India, which states that no person shall be deprived of his life or personal liberty except according to the procedure established by law. Liberty of the individual is always a rule, and deprivation is the exception. Deprivation can only be by the procedure established by law, which has to be a valid and reasonable procedure.
