World Biofuel Day on August 10th emphasizes the importance of biofuels in reducing carbon emissions, enhancing energy security, and promoting sustainable development.

EXPLANATION:

The International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) celebrated World Biofuel Day at its New Delhi campus, focusing on advanced biofuels and carbon capture technologies. The event was a platform for students, researchers, and experts to explore the latest advancements in biofuel technology and discuss their potential role in achieving global and national targets for Net Zero CO2 emissions.

About the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB):

  • It was established as a project of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in 1983. The Organisation has three Component laboratories with over 45 ongoing research projects in Infectious and Non-communicable diseases, Medical, Industrial and Plant Biology Biotechnology in: Trieste, Italy, New Delhi, India and Cape Town, South Africa.
  • On February 3, 1994, under the direction of Arturo Falaschi the ICGEB became an autonomous International Organisation and now has over 65 Member States across world regions.
  • Its main pillars of action comprise: Research, Advanced Education through PhD and Postdoctoral Fellowships, International Scientific Meetings and Courses, competitive Grants for scientists in Member States and Technology Transfer to industry.

World Biofuel Day, observed annually on August 10th, commemorates the groundbreaking achievement of German engineer Sir Rudolf Diesel, who successfully operated an engine using peanut oil on August 9, 1893. This day serves as a global platform to highlight the significance of biofuels as a sustainable energy source and their potential in addressing climate change and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

What Are Biofuels?

Biofuels are renewable energy sources derived from organic materials such as plant and animal waste. They are designed to replace or supplement traditional fossil fuels like petrol and diesel. Common types of biofuels include ethanol, biodiesel, and biogas. Biofuels offer several advantages, including lower greenhouse gas emissions, reduced dependence on oil imports, and the promotion of agricultural and rural development.

Biofuel Production in India

  • India is now the world’s third largest producer and consumer of ethanol.
  • In 2018 India released its National Policy on Biofuels which set blending targets for ethanol (20% blending by 2030) and biodiesel (5% by 2030).
  • As of November 30, 2023, the country’s ethanol production capacity stands at approximately 1,380 crore litres. Of this, around 875 crore litres are derived from molasses, while about 505 crore litres come from grain sources.

India’s National Biofuels Policy

  • The National Biofuels Policy of India, launched in 2018, aims to promote the use of biofuels in the transportation sector. The policy outlines several goals, including achieving a 20% ethanol blending in petrol (E20) by 2025. It encourages the production of biofuels from various feedstocks, including agricultural residues, municipal solid waste, and non-food crops. The policy also provides financial incentives and support for research and development in biofuel technologies.
